Basquiat portrayal fetches record $149m during New York auction

An design by Jean-Michel Basquiat has sole for a record $US110.5 million ($149 million) during auction in New York.

Sotheby’s pronounced a sale of Untitled on Thursday night (local time) in Manhattan was an auction record for a artist.

It also set a record cost for an American artist during auction.

The 1982 portrayal depicts a face in a figure of a skull.

The square was purchased by remarkable Japanese gourmet and businessman Yusaku Maezawa after a 10-minute behest war.

He says he skeleton to eventually arrangement a portrayal in his museum in Chiba, Japan.

The prior auction record for a artist was set final May when Untitled, 1982 sole for $US57.3 million, also to Maezawa.

Basquiat died of a drug overdose in 1988 during age 27.
